Kadai Paneer | Vegetarian

Karahi or Kadai Paneer is traditionally prepared in an Indian wok known as a kadai. A zingy and aromatic dish from northern India, Kadai Paneer is served with breads like parathas, naan and rotis, as well as with white basmati rice.

Kadai Paneer is also a staple of most Indian restaurants, and is quite popular with diners. It is impossible to find any eatery catering to North Indian cuisine that doesn’t serve this paneer gravy delicacy.  

Note: For practical purposes, I will be cooking Kadai Paneer in a regular kitchen flat pan. 

Serving Size

3-4 adults


  • Ghee (clarified butter). You can find ghee in any South Asian store. While you can use any brand of ghee, the one I use is from the company Swad. 
  • Paneer (Indian cottage cheese). You can either prepare paneer at home from scratch or buy a frozen pack (diced or whole) from a South Asian store. I used half of Nanak’s Paneer 400 gram pack (whole/undiced). Remember to thaw the frozen paneer first before cooking.
  • 2 large ripe Tomatoes (diced)
  • 1 large Green Bell Pepper
  • 1/2 medium-sized Onion
  • 1 tbsp Ginger-Garlic paste
  • 1 tbsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tbsp of Turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp Garam Masala powder
  • 1 tbsp Red Chili powder
  • Salt 


• Thaw the frozen paneer. Cut the paneer into small cubes if it is not pre-diced. 

• Dice the tomatoes.

• Slice the green bell pepper in julienne cut.

• Chop the onions.


• Add 3 tablespoons of ghee in a flat pan and heat on medium flame. 

• Add cumin seeds and onions. Saute till onions become translucent and turn light brown.

• Add the ginger-garlic paste and cook for 1 minute. 

• Add the green bell pepper. Stir from time to time until the pepper starts to darken and becomes soft.

• Add the tomatoes and cook until they become soft. 

• Add the powders: turmeric, garam masala, and red chili powder.

• Stir everything together and let it cook for 2 minutes.

• Add the paneer cubes and stir everything together. Let the whole dish cook for 5 minutes so that the flavors are absorbed into the paneer cubes.

• Add salt to taste. Cook for 2 minutes and switch off flame.

• Your Kadai Paneer is now ready to be served! Bon Appetit!
